This will be the first in a series on CBD oil and its benefits.
What is CBD oil?
CBD or cannabidiol is one of many chemical compounds found in cannabis called cannabinoids. It is found along with THC in cannabis sativa. Cannabinoids act on receptors found in the endocannabinoid system.
What is the endocannabinoid system?
The endocannabinoid system or ECS is a system of cell receptors that bond with cannabinoids to regulate homeostasis or the balancing of your body’s physiology. It consists of two types of cell receptors CB1 and CB2.
CB1 is found in the central nervous system and CB2 is found in the immune system, digestive system and many of the body’s organs. When these cell receptors bond with cannabinoids it is described as being like a lock and key mechanism that will activate the ECS.
Studies show that CBD oil can be used to treat different conditions when it activates the ECS.
- Reduce anxiety and depression
- Relieve pain
- Alleviate cancer related symptoms
- Reduce acne
- Might have neuroprotective properties
- Could benefit heart health
What is the difference between CBD and THC?
There are differences between CBD and THC. CBD or cannabidiol is not psychoactive and will not get you high, however THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is psychoactive and causes the sensation of getting high. They both provide you health benefits when you take them but if you don’t want the mind altering effects CBD is the one to use.
CBD oil that contains only 0.3% THC or less is not considered a control substance, however in many states and also at the federal level THC is still considered a controlled substance due to its psychoactive effects.
There are two main subspecies of cannabis sativa marijuana and hemp. What is the difference between marijuana and hemp?
Hemp is mostly bred for industrial purposes. The fibers from it can be used to make rope, clothes, biofuel, oils and the seeds that are harvested are the main source of CBD oil due to the very low amount of THC. It will not get you high.
Marijuana is bred specifically for medical and/or psychoactive purposes and it contains mostly THC that will get you high. The leaves of the marijuana plant tend to be wider and larger than the hemp plant.
What is my personal experience with CBD oil?
I noticed a benefit of CBD oil when I started using it as a good sleep aid. I personally struggle with an anxiety disorder and CBD oil helped relieve my symptoms including panic attacks, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, head pressure and being unable to sleep.
After taking CBD oil I started sleeping better due to anxiety being under control. According to an article I read (“Using CBD oil to treat anxiety” by Cathy Wong) the ongoing research suggests that CBD oil impacts the endocannabinoid system by influencing the receptors responsible for controlling the amount of serotonin (the neurotransmitter that regulates anxiety).
I started taking CBD oil along with the other supplements due to recurrent episodes of anxiety and depression and it immediately had a positive effect.
My first dosage came from ingesting an edible with 30mg, the second from a 150mg tincture and the third from a 250 mg topical cream.
Since December my symptoms have improved. CBD oil is a product that can help many people not just to treat mental illness, but many other ailments.
What are the side effects of CBD oil?
The research indicates that using CBD oil may trigger a number of side effects including anxiety, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting. There are also possible safety concerns if you take certain medications, because there may be an increase in liver enzymes when they react with CBD oil.
My experience will hopefully be an inspiration for others suffering from chronic health issues. However, before I started taking CBD oil I consulted with a professional first, because side effects occur if the dosage is too high and side effects are different for everybody.
